Mindful Moment Room

When my youngest son was at senior school and caused a disturbance in the classroom, the first thing the teacher did was to send him outside the classroom into the corridor and then he was given a detention, where he had to stay after school to write ‘lines’, making everything feel stupid and unfair.   This continued bad behaviour nearly caused him to be permanently excluded and ‘labelled’ him as a ‘bad boy’.

It made my blood boil.

As you are well aware, as the Rootmaster, I feel compelled to find the ‘root cause’.

I wanted to know why he was causing a disturbance and what solution would stop it.

He had a challenge with learning from a teacher using the blackboard or images.  Plus he had a challenge with learning by just ‘listening’.  After having him assessed, it came to light that he is dyslexic (this was not recognised within the school) and he is a Kinesthetic learner.  That means that reading English was like a foreign language, (as words that had no image, such as a, at, of ….. completely lost his comprehension of what he was reading) and he needed to do ‘hands on’ learning.  Acting it out, or building a model.

Using Ancestral Healing at that time, which cleared the blocks and negative energies from his ‘Soul Records’, changed everything and he continued in education gaining excellent results in his GCSE’s.  He is now in business and doing very well in life.

In Baltimore, USA, Robert W. Coleman Elementary School has been doing something different when students act out: offering meditation.

Yes!  As a teacher of Meditation, I’ve been beating this drum for years…

Instead of punishing disruptive kids or sending them to the principal’s office, the Baltimore school has something called the Mindful Moment Room instead.

The room looks nothing like your standard windowless detention room. Instead, it’s filled with lamps, decorations, and plush purple pillows. Misbehaving kids are encouraged to sit in the room and go through practices like breathing or meditation, helping them calm down and re-center. They are also asked to talk through what happened.

Mindful meditation has been around in some form or another for thousands of years. Recently, though, science has started looking at its effects on our minds and bodies, and it’s finding some interesting effects.

Mindfulness improves well being

  1. Increasing your capacity for mindfulness supports many attitudes that contribute to a satisfied life.

  2. Being mindful makes it easier to savor the pleasures in life as they occur, helps you become fully engaged in activities, and creates a greater capacity to deal with adverse events.

  3. By focusing on the here and now, many people who practice mindfulness find that they are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets over the past, are less preoccupied with concerns about success and self-esteem, and are better able to form deep connections with others.

Mindfulness improves physical health

If greater well-being isn’t enough of an incentive, scientists have discovered the benefits of mindfulness techniques help improve physical health in a number of ways. Mindfulness can:

  1. help relieve stress

  2. treat heart disease

  3. lower blood pressure

  4. reduce chronic pain

  5. improve sleep

  6. alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties

Mindfulness improves mental health

  1. depression

  2. substance abuse

  3. eating disorders

  4. couples’ conflicts

  5. anxiety disorders

  6. obsessive-compulsive disorder

Some experts believe that mindfulness works, in part, by helping people to accept their experiences—including painful emotions—rather than react to them with aversion and avoidance.

Imagine if every school in the UK had a Mindful Moment Room?
